MOLLY BROCKLEHURST
Molly Brocklehurst is a British, figurative painter based in Austin, Texas. Her work is characterised by a limited palette and nostalgic, dreamlike narratives. Brocklehurst studied Fine Art in the United Kingdom, graduating with an MFA from Wimbledon College of Art in London in 2019 and a BA (Hons) from Leeds Arts University in 2016. Her work has since been exhibited in the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, and the USA, and is held in private collections internationally, including The Wing in London and Soho House in New York.
Brocklehurst takes her inspiration from the troves of human archives—curated collections of imagery she gathers from flea markets, antique shops, and online archives. Being particularly drawn to vintage ‘found photographs,’ she uses their imperfections and anonymity to explore themes of memory, nostalgia, and storytelling. The subjects in her work, shaped by the cultures and communities of the places she lives and travels to, capture authentic moments of people absorbed in their actions and surroundings, unaware of the viewer.
Extracting figures from photographs as a starting point, she reconstructs and reimagines the images through a nostalgic lens, creating narratives that blur the boundary between documentary and fiction. The figures and scenes are grounded yet also detached from reality, like fragments of a memory. Her intuitive use of colour, marked by carefully considered pairings, infuses her work with an ethereal quality. Combining finer details with simplified forms and flat planes of colour, she further abstracts the composition, mirroring the gaps and distortions of recollection while encouraging viewers to piece together their own interpretation of the work.
Brocklehurst’s paintings invite viewers to journey through the landscapes of our collective histories, creating works that feel both familiar and unfamiliar. Ambiguous stories emerge through paint, where imagination and blurred realities coalesce in a dreamlike dance.
