CHRISTY STALLOP
Christy Stallop is an artist living in Austin, Texas. Born and raised in El Paso, her work is greatly influenced by the West. She received a degree in Art Education from St. Edwards University and taught art at a small tier-one charter school for 11 years. During that time, Christy was the illustrator chair of the local Chapter of The Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators group and published several books for the children’s market. In 2016, She left teaching to paint full time and it has become her primary pursuit. Christy’s work has been selected for the City of Austin’s People’s Gallery and the Art in Public Places TEMPO programs.
Christy Stallop’s oil paintings are vignettes of the West, depicted through a few of its unwitting icons, including grackles, bandanas, and local landmarks. Best known for her lovable grackles painted in oil, Stallop imbues her emotionally intelligent sense of humor into her work. “Sometimes you need something that makes you smile,” she has said. A lifelong creative, Stallop refined her painting technique over years of teaching art, as is evident in the formal qualities of her work. Her ability to render her whimsical subjects so beautifully grounds her paintings, allowing viewers to connect with her work in an unexpected way.
