Catherine Allen

Catherine Allen

Catherine Allen was born in 1982 in Midland, Texas. After graduating from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin with a bachelor’s degree in painting in 2010, she went to work in her hometown of Midland. After spending several years outside the field of fine art, she began once again to focus on oil painting, using the skills and perspective she acquired in school and at various jobs to enrich her paintings.

Allen uses photographic images from the periphery of her daily life in Midland, an area known for oil and gas production and a boom-or-bust economy. These photographs become source material in the  construction of descriptive digital mockups that are then translated into the medium of oil paint. For Allen, art is a pursuit that feeds off day-to-day existence. Her work has been shown across Texas, with notable shows including the Texas Biennial 2017, the Oso Bay Biennial XX, Texas Vignette 2019, and a 2022 solo show “En Route” at Texas A&M Wright Gallery. Her work is in the collections of the University of Texas at Tyler and the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
